The Obesity Epidemic

Why do so many people need to lose weight? Take a look around and you will see that the number of obese people is growing, no pun intended. There have to be reasons as to why this has become such a serious problem in today’s society. Maybe it’s the food we are eating. Maybe it’s our lifestyles that is the cause of this weight problem. Or, more realistically, maybe it is a combination of both. Regardless of the reasons, it has become a very serious problem and there is a huge health and financial cost associated with it.

How has our life style really changed so much that it is causing us to put on too much weight? Many experts will give an emphatic yes to this question. For one thing, too many people are now leading more sedentary lives. We have become less and less active and we know that physical activity helps with personal weight control. Many people have become consumed by their daily work routine and schedules so much that they leave little or no time for exercise. Not even a simple thing like taking a walk each day!

If you need to lose weight you will have to begin to add some exercise into your daily routine. It is an important piece of the puzzle. However, some people think that this is all that is required to lose weight. The reality is that the food we eat is also a very important factor in losing and controlling our weight. There are no magic pills or diets that do the trick. We have to control what we eat and include more physical activity in our daily routines if we want to maintain a healthy weight.

Because many families now have both parents working, there is a tendency to eat fast foods rather than take the time to prepare more nutritious meals at home. Many will tell you that they just don’t have the time to prepare meals. We now have a generation of young people growing up on practically nothing but fast foods. Habits are hard to break, and so it is with the foods we eat. It is any wonder people have so much difficulty losing weight when they have been brought up on fast foods?

How serious is the weight problem? Is it something that is being perpetuated by the weight loss industry in order to sell more diets or exercise equipment? No, it is a real problem and a serious one. Many people who have been diagnosed as being obese are also suffering from a variety of different illnesses including heart disease and diabetes. Very often these illnesses provide the catalyst needed for people to address their obesity problem and embark on a program to change their dietary habits and lose weight. The healthy diet required to address the illness is often the same diet required to help them to lose weight.

For some reason people do not seem to be taking there weight problems with much concern. Many appear to have fallen into a state of confusion with regards to their weight. So many people are ill informed. They have no idea of the harm they are doing to themselves when they eat poorly balanced diets. They think they diet foods are good for them when in fact the reverse is true and these foods are actually contributing to their obesity.

If people want to lose weight steps have to be taken to change the way we view this issue. If people are not educated on the seriousness of the weight issue it will only get worse. Although a certain sympathy is appropriate for those people who apparently “know no better”, it is incumbent upon all of us to be well informed and to be in a position to make educated choices. Prevention is always better than cure, but if you are already in the unfortunate position of being overweight you have a second chance to reverse the situation, to learn how to lose weight quickly and improve your overall health.

Healthy Weight Loss

It would be so great if we could lose weight when ever we wanted to. Some people may even tell you that they can do such a thing, but is it a healthy weight loss? Two things we have to keep in mind when losing weight is keep it healthy and keep it off! Many people tend to get on the weight loss yo-yo, losing and gaining, losing and gaining. The problem with this is that we usually gain more weight than we started with as we go up and down. The most difficult change in our lives is to change the way we eat and what we eat. Our eating habits got us into the excess weight situation and it is the only thing that will get us out of it.

It is amazing how people will forgo their health in order to lose weight as fast as possible. Healthy weight loss has to be the main focus of any weight loss plan. Anything less can and will only result in more problems. And if more problems arise we tend to get discouraged with our attempts at losing weight and tend to give up. It is a lot easier to sit back and do nothing than struggle with our weight. Sometimes the path of least resistance is the path we follow.

But as individuals we have to find the inner strength to continue. We have to overcome our discouragement and continue to struggle but with a positive attitude. If we are determined and focused we can lose those extra pounds. And changing our eating habits is the one thing that will lead us to success. It doesn’t matter how much exercising you do, if you fail to make the necessary changes in your eating habits you will never lose the weight.

I have compiled a list of do’s and don’t that you may find helpful in your weight loss efforts. Healthy Weight Loss is basically trying to keep these things in perspective. The problem is that there are so many people out there offering their opinion on what we should and shouldn’t do to lose weight and many of them who “think” they know, are actually giving you false information. Here is my list of well researched healthy weight loss tips, I hope you find them helpful.

DON’T…

DON’T forget that although calories count, it is no use counting calories and not taking sensible account of the need to eat healthy weight reducing foods.

Don’t reduce you calories too low as your body will think it is in starvation mode and reduce your metabolism.

DON’T go it alone. Get support from others.

DON’T be fooled by the latest fad diet. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

DON’T drink your calories – eat them. Solid food provides greater satisfaction and provides the body with what it needs to function optimally.

DON’T let others tell you what’s right for you. You need to lose weight for yourself.

DON’T set unrealistic goals. You should expect to lose about 1-2 pounds per week. That is realistic.

DON’T get distracted. Losing weight takes time.

DO………

· DO monitor your progress. Weighing yourself once a week and taking your measurements. Measurements can often be a better indicator of progress

· DO choose to eat healthy, wholesome foods from all of the food groups. Get the essential nutrients you need, whilst making appropriate choices for weight loss.

· DO exercise. Anything more than what you’re doing now is a plus, but a personally tailored exercise regime will show results much quicker.

· DO eat a protein rich breakfast every day.

· DO eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, to ensure there is plenty of fibre in your diet.

· DO learn positive coping skills so that you don’t turn to food for comfort.

· DO drink at least six 8oz.glasses of water every day.

· DO eat enough food to satisfy you. Starvation is not the way forward

· DO benefit from the experience of others who have successfully lost weight and maintained their weight loss

Success can be yours in the weight loss arena. Stay focused and committed. And when you have one of those bad days where you eat something you shouldn’t have, don’t quit. Take it as a weak moment and start again the next day. You will never succeed if you give up! Healthy weight loss requires making life changes. Make those changes and you will be glad you did.

Lose Weight Fast

Lose Weight Fast

When we put on a few extra pounds and begin to realize that can become a serious health issue we all want to lose those extra pounds. And most of us want to lose weight fast. However, we have to realize that it takes some time to lose those pounds in a safe and healthy fashion. If we want to lose some weight and keep it off then changes have to be made in our lifestyles.

Too be successful at weight loss is more than simply eating less. It requires some changes, and for some people these changes can be life altering. It usually is a matter of eating and living differently. By making physical activity and healthy eating a part of your life, you can feel healthier, reduce your risk for chronic diseases and lose weight. Losing weight isn’t the key to happiness — happiness is the key to knowing how to lose weight. Losing weight is simple, and if done correctly it’s predictable. It’s all about having a caloric deficit at the end of each day, every day, until you reach your target weight.

I am sure you have heard of the epidemic with reference to weight problems. Some people are simply overweight while others are obese. Obesity refers specifically to an excess of body fat. It is possible to be overweight without being obese, as in the case of a body builder who has a substantial amount of muscle mass. Obesity is not a disease? A disease is something you can catch. Obesity is now considered a disease–not a moral failing. According to a 1995 report from the Institute of Medicine, obesity is a heterogeneous disease in which genetic, environmental, psychological, and other factors are involved.

We have the facts. Health professionals are constantly researching and conducting studies on how to best handle our weight. Studies have shown there are so many health risks associated with being overweight or obese. What we know now is that overweight people have an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and other illnesses. If you lose weight it reduces the risk. Overweight women have an increased risk, compared to average-weight women, of getting breast cancer after menopause. And being overweight can increase the risk of breast cancer coming back in women who have had the disease.

Some will disagree, but many feel that diets do not work when it comes to weight loss. Diets can be a starting point in your attempt to change your eating habits. The stress of not eating as much as you want makes your system more acid. Dieting won’t make you see huge hairy bats (unless, of course, you saw huge hairy bats before). Diets aren’t the way to go when it comes to being able to lose weight. That’s because they create temporary eating patterns — and, therefore, temporary results.

Lose Weight Fast

Lose Weight Fast

Why is it that people who become overweight, which usually occurs over a long period of time, feel that they can lose that weight in a short period of time. What makes people believe that you can lose weight fast in a healthy fashion? Wanting things right now has become a part of our society. Immediate gratification. Of course there are programs that can make you lose some weight fast but it the weight usually cannot be maintained. In fact when the weight comes back, it comes back even stronger. Healthy weight loss takes time and determination. It takes sacrifices and commitment. The good news is that you can lose weight in a safe and healthy manner.

If you want to lose weight, you have to have a plan. Like a carpenter that is building a house, you have to have your blueprint for weight loss and follow it. It is possible to lose weight consistently over several weeks and this could over time be classed as fast weight loss. But in order to successfully lose weight fast you need to change your perception of the word fast in this context. A weight loss of 2lb per week on a regular basis would mean that you would lose approximately 16lb over a 2 month period. If you have dieted sensibly and consistently then you will have lost 16lb of fat and will be far more likely to keep that weight off. If you tried to lose weight fast by following a fad diet then you may have lost 9lb the first week and probably put a couple on the following week as your body adjusts. You may get despondent and have a few days off and put a bit more back on. Over the 2 months of this type of dieting you may only lose about 2lb in total

Our world is changing very fast. And we want everything without waiting around. We want fast food, fast cars, fast everything. We want a quick fix and we are not prepared to go to the trouble of doing things the way nature intended. The chances are you didn’t put 9lb’s worth of fat on in 11 days so equally the chances are you won’t be able to lose 9lb’s worth of fat in 11 days. A diet that promises that you will lose weight fast is manipulating you into believing it is the answer to your prayers.

Advertisers know that we want things fast and they play on our emotions. They tell us we can have it now without waiting, or at least a short wait. If you read the slogan “Lose Weight Fast” – I guarantee it is just a gimmick – but doubtless many will fall for it and many will truly believe they have lost 9lbs of fat in 11 days. Mainly because that is what they want to believe. Any weight loss program should be approached hand in hand with healthy eating. Well balanced nutritious food eaten on a regular basis, in conjunction with a moderate exercise plan is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. This is a diet for life, not even a diet for the duration of the weight loss program and certainly not a diet for 11 days.

If you are serious about losing weight you have to make changes in your life style. Forget about those overnight weight loss programs. It is vital that any weight loss regime teaches you how to change the bad eating habits that have caused you to be overweight in the first place. This is about re educating your taste buds and changing your dietary habits. Once you have reached your target weight you can always have the occasional day off but the healthy eating plan must be the mainstay of your new way of eating. Put the lose weight fast regime behind you and start to approach your diet in a new and different way
